A paradigm shift in the Education system landscape is foreseen with the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This topic is of a high importance as it guarantees knowledge sustainability, knowledge being fundamentally beyond information, it is a conscious information that can be transmitted and developed.
Timeline of Education
Church and monasteries dominate curriculum in Europe e.g. Thomas Aquinas (faith and reason). Appearance of early universities e.g. University of Bologna.
Renaissance era: curriculum expansion to literature, history, arts in Humanist schools where Human-centred education governed e.g. Erasmus critical thinking, classical learning.
Enlightenment era: Education seen as shaping individuals and society. Early public schooling ideas with John Locke and the learning through experience (tabula rasa), and Jean-Jacques Rousseau with a child-centred education.
This is the mass schooling era, education became public and accessible to all. Governments introduced a universal education and Standardized curriculum and classrooms with e.g. Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi and the learning by doing.
Then, education evolved from memorization to active learning in Child-centred schools. Learning by experience was still in the centre and the progressive education by John Dewey.
Later schools evolved to be research-based. The scientific understanding of learning emerged. Skinner and behaviourism (rewards/punishment). Piaget, cognitive development stages, and Vygotsky, social learning. Education becomes psychology-driven.
In the late 20th century, critical & social education became inclusive in reform-based systems focusing on equality, empowerment, and access, Paulo Freire, critical pedagogy.
The 21st century education evolved to be technology-driven, digital, global, flexible with online learning, hybrid schools in skill-based education (critical thinking, creativity).
